Marine Insurance Survey
Before an insurer will underwrite or renew coverage on your vessel, they often require a current marine survey. An insurance survey provides a focused assessment of the vessel’s condition and safety systems to help underwriters determine insurability, risk level, and coverage terms.
At Atlantic Marine Group, we perform insurance surveys that meet the requirements of all major insurance carriers. As experienced marine surveyors, we know what insurers look for—and we make sure your report covers it. Whether you are seeking a new policy or renewing an existing one, we provide the necessary documentation to ensure a smooth process without delays.
What Is Included in a Marine Insurance Survey?
While not as extensive as a pre-purchase survey, an insurance survey still involves a comprehensive check of all required safety gear, structural elements, and basic operational systems. Our insurance surveys typically include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Hull and Deck Inspection
Visual inspection of the hull, deck, transom, and structure above the waterline for signs of damage, stress, or prior repairs. - Electrical System Check
Review of battery installations, wiring condition, and proper grounding. - Fuel and Plumbing Systems
Inspection of tanks, hoses, clamps, and connections for leaks or corrosion. - Steering and Control Systems
Functional test of helm controls, cables, and steering response. - Safety Equipment Verification
Confirmation that fire extinguishers, flares, bilge pumps, alarms, life jackets, and other required equipment are present, accessible, and compliant. - Visible Engine and Generator Inspection
Basic condition check of accessible engine components. (Note: No sea trial or diagnostics unless specifically requested.) - Hull Identification Number (HIN) and Registration Check
Ensures compliance with state and federal requirements. - Valuation Statement
Fair market value (FMV) and replacement cost (RCV) for use by your insurer.
When Is an Insurance Survey Required?
Most insurers request an updated survey every 5 to 10 years, or when writing a new policy on a used vessel. It may also be required after major repairs, upgrades, or storm-related damage. We recommend confirming your provider’s requirements prior to scheduling.
